So I’ll be the first to admit it. When Bioware announced they were adding an online multiplayer aspect to Mass Effect, I groaned. After all, I don’t play ME for the shooter aspect, I play it for the roleplaying and storyline. The streamlined shooting is just a nice added bonus. Thoughts of CoD broskis invading ME made me die a little inside.
That being said, I finally got a chance to play the multiplayer last night and I am impressed. I was worried that it would just be a ton of Commander Shepards throwing shockwaves everywhere, or worse, a replica of BioShock2’s multiplayer. The way they designed mp is great— everyone has to help one another or else the whole team will quickly become overwhelmed. You have incentive to rescue fallen teammates because it will be very difficult to take down an Atlas AND a phantom all by yourself.
A couple things made me a bit grouchy, but they are most likely minor glitches that will get ironed out as time goes on. There were a few times I tried to rez a teammate and even though I stood right on top of them pressing “a”, nothing happened. And then I got hit by a guardian from behind and died on top of them. I’ve also had biotic issues where it says I am ready to go and have nothing happen when I slam on the buttons. It’s not my controller— I made sure of that.
Otherwise, I am loving the multiplayer. I can’t wait to unlock a Krogan.
